Stephen Murray back for Birmingham!

We’ve had word from Mr Stay Strong himself Stephen Murray that he’s booked and 100% coming back to the UK for the World Championships in Birmingham next month…Stephens only trip to the UK was a couple of years ago when he came back for a visit to Bob Fields Grands, we caught up with Stephen for a few words:

Stephen with Mike Redman in Chula Vista

BMX Talk – So Stephen we’ve heard you’re coming back to the UK..what prompted you to come home for the Worlds, you’ve only been home once since 2007?
Stephen: Well travel isn’t easy when you’re in my situation so I’ve only been back once and that included a trip to Bob Fields Grands. I was pumped to see everyone that day. I raced the last two Worlds in the UK and made the finals both times. So there is no way I would want to miss this event and at least be in the stands watching the action.

BMX Talk You’ve got a pretty big race team now too?
Stephen: Yeah that’s right, thanks to Bensink BMX Gates from Holland and the help of Rockstar, and Clark and Kent, we were able to step the team up to around 10 riders which was a massive jump from last year when Darryn Goodwin was our main International rider. I got to catch up with a few of them the other week in Chula Vista but in Birmingham the whole team will be there and I’ll get to hang out with them and watch them all race. I’m hoping we can get a couple of finalists too. Our Argentinian Junior Nico Santolini could definately make the main and it would be amzing if Shanaze could take home the win riding our frame. We gotta get the NIA rocking that night and get the crowd behind her for the win. I also saw Liam Phillips has been flying this year too.. I was over the moon when Shanaze said she wanted to represent Stay Strong, and I’ll be buzzing when she takes home win! We’ve got 6 riders in Elite Men and 2 in Junior at the Worlds so hopefully they can do well and get in the big show.

So you still try to keep up with the race scene?
Yeah of course..Well I always try to go to Chula Vista races as they are pretty close. That’s always a good chance to catch up with everyone there.. My dads still a huge fan and always keeps me in the loop as does Dale (Holmes). I try to watch the Freecaster stuff when World Cups are on. I’ll follow how the team riders are getting on and am always checking out their Facebook’s. My carer will log into BMX Talk at least once a week for me so I can see what’s going on over there. So yeah I’m still a fan you could say!

BMX Talk – It’s been a long time since you raced and a lot has changed, how do you like the new format and style of tracks etc?

Stephen: Well when I raced I always liked technical tracks, loved racing in Tours etc but the tracks when you look back were never really that crazy. Everything probably seemed bigger because we were younger. I wish the SX racing was around when I was still Junior Men becasue I probably would have stayed into racing for longer.I’d have been all over these types of tracks with the big hill and berm jumps. That was my thing, I liked to go big which is why I moved into dirt really. SX racing is great, it’s fast, exciting and a better show for the fans. It’s funny we used to think Coppull had a big starting hill when we were younger!

BMX Talk:So what are your plans for your trip home?
Stephen: I’m going to be down at Red Bull Empire of Dirt the weekend before the Worlds..I can’t wait for this event. Kye and the crew will make this a sick event. Then I’m going to be at Jason Alliano’s for a couple of days seeing my old friends and spending time with family before coming up to the NIA. Stay Strong will have a stand at the event so I want to hang out there and see as many people as I can between watching the racing. We are going to be giving out signed posters and stuff on the stand and the World team willl be doing autograph signings on the Thursday. It’s a good chance to catch up with everyone so I can’t wait. Definately come past and see us, I’m looking forward to meeting everyone. The race scene has really embraced Stay Strong and supported me and I’m really grateful for that so seeing all the black and yellow floating around the NIA will be awesome to see.

BMX Talk– Alright well thanks for the heads up and we’ll see you in a few weeks
Stephen: Cheers BMX Talk, see you all at the Worlds!
