Racing is on the up all across the globe and as we enjoy this upward cycle we also get to check out racing and tracks in less obvious countries. I personally like to see videos and check out race scenes from countries that you’d not normally expect to see riding BMX.
So where is the Reunion Island? This is a small island with a population of 800,000 in the Indian Ocean 120 miles from Mauritius and off the coast of Madagascar. With the quick geography lesson out of the way, The “Isle de la Reunion” is actually a French Island with a growing BMX contingent. Some of France’s top Elite riders including Moana Moo Caille were raised on this beach and surf paradise. The tracks are generally long and the riders are fit as they have a solid coaching structure out there and boast some strong talent right through the age ranks. Part of France’s allocation for qualified riders to Birmingham World Championships has to be given to riders from this Island and many of the top riders from here take part in the French Championship finals as the Island although a 14hr flight away is still clased as a region of France. I met the rider interviewed in the video Olivier Begue in Copenhagen as he was in our practice block at the Worlds. He was jumping the big triple into turn one and was ranked W2 … Although in French he talks about looking to win the World’s at the NIA in May after coming close making 5 World finals with 3 podiums in recent years…
Reports are that Saturday’s ticket allocation for the NIA is close to selling out! Click the link before they all go and grab your moto passes and event tickets here : www.bmxworlds.co.uk
Check out the video, rugged, no tarmac, BMX racing still pure! :
