Derby BMX club finally have some good news to celebrate at their home track at Alvaston Park. Phase one of their club development plans have been put in action after receiving nearly £50,000 of funding from a Sport England grant last year. The club redesigned their start hill and first straight to replicate the common trend in national standard tracks from around the country and create a better all-round facility for the club to operate from.
The club wanted to update their track to a more modern design to help their talented riders progress on a national and international level and at the same time try to combat the recent spate of constant misfortune through break in’s to the club’s necessary equipment. In the past 12 months £20,000 worth of equipment has been stolen including machine plant from track contractor MaxTrax during the recent renovation.
Lauren Smith, Derby BMX Chair and head coach, said “The opening of the track couldn’t have come at a better time, with a number of our riders racing the opening series of the British BMX series at Manchester’s National Cycling Centre this weekend, they are getting in some excellent practise on a state of the art start hill. The new design is brilliant, it’s taken slightly longer than expected as the weather has been against us over the winter, and the plans to secure our containers meant it was a big earth moving job, however the results are fantastic. The design of the area will really help at club sessions as well as race days. It has made everything a lot easier to operate from which is really good news as we are all volunteer’s giving up our time to run the club. The new design has it all, the start hill replicates something more seen at national and international races, whereas the first jump has so many lines across it, it has options for all levels of riders from novice to elite. Something we really wanted to achieve. It’s great to see 7 year old’s flying down the start hill and jump into the first jump, a skill that’s key for BMX racers”

Phase two of the club’s development plan includes the whole track to be floodlit which will mean the riders can continue to use the facility during the dark winter evenings. This is due to take place over the summer in time for next winter.
Will Hart, club volunteer and rider added “I had fun playing on new layout and the start hill is a big improvement” Hart, whose son, Josh, 7 and daughter Caitie, 4 also ride for the club. “Josh absolutely loved it. The mutli-line first jump has definitely given the young riders something easy to get there wheels off the ground. Even some of our newer riders jumped into the first jump, so will now allow good progression for all our club riders”
Cameron Poulter, 14, one of the original club members: “I’ve been riding as part of Derby BMX Club since the track was opened in 2008, it’s great to see what we have now. The first jump has so many lines across it and I can put my skills to good use. I’m really looking forward to the season ahead”
Frankie Monks 12, “The new start hill is sick, I love it. It’s great to ride really fast”
Niall Monks 14, who is racing the 2015 World Championships in Belgium “It’s great to see the club supporting us as riders and helping us progress at national and international races. These changes will really benefit us”
The club regularly run coaching sessions on a Saturday morning, and will host Round 5 of the Midlands Regional series on the newly re-vamped track on Sunday 7th June.
The club had their best year on track to date in 2014 with 2 World Ranked riders, 3 British Champions, 2 National Champions and 8 Regional champions, these track improvements will only see the club continue to progress.
