You may have seen a lot of coverage recently on social media of Euro pro riders shredding possibly the best backyard track in the World and started hearing the name Derek Sipkoi a lot..Well @sippydkoi is a face in the So.Cal scene, he hails from Canada but lives in Temecula CA the hometown of a lot of big Pro names included, Maris, Willers, Nobles, Bucchanan, Sifiso Nhalapo etc. His backyard track is becoming the hub of BMX in that area and it’s a destination on the list of any visiting Pro, especially the Euro’s as of late..
Sippy has been working on his brands for the last couple of years, DKOI Bikes and Alius BMX. Those in the know will have seen his stuff coming up, but due to not having plowed big bucks into advertising it still has a core underground image, but is definitely on the crest of blowing up so be prepared to see a lot more of it out there this year as Alius is starting to make noise! We caught up with Derek on a recent Cali trip so he could fill us in on how it all started:
Sippy: “When I first peddled onto a BMX track at the age of 7 I realized this was the life for me. Full freedom and a sport that promotes individualism and focusing on ones personal best results. This kept me motivated most of my career until I stepped into the factory team spotlight. I thought it was the greatest support until I realized the dude holding the team sheet roster doesn’t care 1 bit about my input as a pro on the bike and parts that I’m sponsored by and representing. I wanted to have my input and help to better the brands I was with but no one wanted to listen..
As a BMXer I don’t want to be told what to do. I want to run things my way, carefree. This gave me the motive to get DKOI and ALIUS going and at a hi speed rate to catch my competitor brands by offering great products at reasonable prices and putting my heart, time and love of BMX into developing anything I make to be the top notch product. In a short 2 years I have used my personal money to develop and promote both brands which have been excelling so rapidly I couldn’t be more thrilled. the company has not spent the most on advertising but has worked hand and hand with a lot of top pros in developing and marketing the brand to build it’s hype. With no magazine adds and just riders promoting the rider owned and operated companies we have been rapidly gaining so many fans and much “family” support. As a company we look forward to chasing the dream and making this rider owned company the next best thing in the sport for not just parts and riders and teams but also working to give back to the sport we all love so much. BMX!!!”
