MANCHESTER COUNTS DOWN TO THE UCI BMX SUPERCROSS WORLD CUP
As the Great Britain BMX Team is announced, the countdown has begun to the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Manchester, returning to the National Cycling Centre April 18-19.
The event, which last year hosted a sell-out finals session, will see the world’s best BMX riders race to the finish line across two days of fierce competition. Olympian and 2014 World Cup winner Liam Phillips will lead the charge for the Great Britain Cycling Team, attempting a third consecutive win in the Manchester round.
Liam will be joined in the Elite Men’s field by teammates Quillan Isidore, Tre Whyte and Wigan’s Kyle Evans. Charlotte Green will head the Great Britain campaign in the Elite Women’s racing.
Known around the world as a Mecca for indoor BMX, Manchester’s newly primed track will see athletes from over 30 countries fly through the starting gates for their shot at a podium finish. Olympic gold medallist Mariana Pajon will ride for her native Colombia, with twice Olympic champion Maris Strombergs also expected to appear.
Looking ahead to the opening round of the 2015 world cup series, Liam Phillips said: “The National Cycling Centre is my home ground. We’re incredibly fortunate to train on the same world-class track that will again host April’s World Cup competition.
“The arena takes on a very different edge when the world cup begins and I’m looking forward to sharing that atmosphere with fans in the stands.”
The first round of the five-stop 2015 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series takes place on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April. The event is part of UK Sport’s Major Events programme, which aims to bring over 70 of the world’s most prestigious sporting events to the UK by 2019, backed by British Cycling and Manchester City Council.
Single-day tickets for the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup are priced from just £7. For further event information and to purchase tickets, visit www.ticketmaster.co.uk/britishcycling.
