This week BMXTalk had a chat with Kelvin Batey and asked him a few questions about racing and also being Masters W1.
BMXTalk-what was your best race this season?
KB- There isn’t any particular race that stands out where I rode outstanding this season ,but I stayed consistent and kept things at a similar level all the way through which was one of my aims for the year.
(BMXTalk-Hmmmmm I remember a particular race that stands way out ….W1 ring any bells mate haha)
BMXTalk- What is your favourite track?
KB-. My favourite track is Cyclopark. The first 3 straights are so good to ride and really suit the Elite style of racing. I have also been riding Shepshed quite a lot since the end of the season as its just a fun track to go and session.
BMXTalk-What are your plans for next year?
KB- My plans for next year are really similar to this year really. Enjoy my racing and competing in the Elite class over here, staying consistent and injury free. These races should put me in a good position to go over to Holland and defend the World Title.
BMXTalk-Gate starts or track speed , which is your strength?
KB- I don’t think I have a particular strength or weakness in starts or track speed but I put a lot of effort into getting better gates last winter which did make a difference, although I think this may have been to the detriment of my track speed. Its something I would like to try and balance out for next year.
BMXTalk-What will your training routine be for winter.
KB- Training changes from month to month but it compromises of the regular stuff that everyone will do such as track, sprints and gym.
Its hard to fit the training around work but its something I have always enjoyed and with good goals to aim for next year this helps to keep me motivated.
BMXTalk-And finally, how did it feel when you crossed the line at the World champs, and are you still buzzing on the W1??
KB- I felt quite calm when I crossed the line in Auckland and it wasn’t the reaction I was expecting from myself.
It was something I had come so close to doing quite a few times over the years so to have finally won a World Title was just pure relief.
I feel really proud to wear the UCI stripes for a year and will aim to hold onto them for another year.
I used to look at Dale’s collection of Worlds medals when I was over at his house and now I have my own collection of all 3 medal colours it really makes me feel like I have rounded my career off no matter what happens in the future.
Thanks for that Kelvin, and congrats again on the W1,and all of us at BMXTalk would like to wish you the best of luck for 2014.
