Prince Phillips

Phillips back on top after round three of the UCI BMX SX World Cup in Angelholm.

Team Great Britain made it over to round three of the UCI BMX SX World Cup in Sweden and was confronted by heavy winds that postponed and cancelled part of the program. The entire girl racing was moved to Sunday and the Time Trials superfinals for the top 16 men and top 8 women in the World Cup ranking got cancelled completely. But that didn’t destroy Britain’s party as Liam Phillips gave the team something to celebrate.

Liam was back to his old self and wanted to brush off the disappointing results of the UCI BMX SX World Championships in Zolder where he had set his mind on another Elite Men World Title. The strong rider did not seem to have many problems with the wind which was still around on Sunday and had UCI’s technical delegate Kevin Macquish hold the wind meter up before every race. Liam blazed through the motos and qualifying rounds but as everyone knows, the competition is close up on top.

Liam left the Lane 8 Double Dice special for what it was and safely chose lane 1 on the inside. A good snap was needed to challenge the likes of Connor Fields, Sam Willoughby, 2015 World Champ Niek Kimmann, Olympic bronze medalist Carlos Oquendo, Corben Sharrah, DJ Bodi Turner and an on form Trent Jones from New Zealand. Phillips put the power on and grabbed the holeshot with Aussies Sam and Bodi right behing him. Holland’s Niek Kimmann was keeping some distance and ready for a high-low move in the first turn incase something would happen with the top three riders in front of him. The pro section was tricky with the strong wind coming from behind so catching good backside wasn’t always happening. Sam Willoughby lost a spot to Niek Kimmann who moved up to third behind Bodi and Liam. But in all honesty, there was no one fit enough to catch up with Liam. Only a personal mistake could hold him off the win but he kept it clean till the finish line and celebrated the win with his dad, the crowd and team GB right aftwerwards. In the last turn Turner pushed Kimmann up high which allowed Willoughby to come in from below and grab the last podium spot. Kimmann settled for 4th. Trent Jones had another tough crash to finish 8th and Quendo, Sharrah and Fields crossed the finish line in that order for 5th, 6th, and 7th.

Because of this strong race, Liam moved up to first place again in the World Cup ranking. He will be lining up at Round 4 in Argentina with the red leader plate.
