Squad announced for World Championships

Team GB going to Colombia

News broke yesterday from British Cycling of the ‘Squad’ they will be funding to race the World Championships in Colombia. Huge congratulations to Liam Phillips, Kyle Evans and Beth Shriever. These 3 really proved their worth this past weekend in Manchester at round 2 of the UCI Supercross. Liam & Kyle going 1 2 in the final and Beth just missing out on the Elite woman’s final with a 5th in the semi, Remember Beth is only 16 and this was her 1st World Cup, Amazing achievement.

But we are focusing on who’s not been picked and why….. GB have 9 places that could be filled, her is how thats broken down

  • 5 Elite Men (+ Liam’s automatic place by making last years final)
  • 1 Elite Woman
  • 1 Junior Men
  • 1 Junior Woman

So who’s been overlooked………

Tre Whyte – Paddy Sharrock – Quillan Isidore

The news forced a LOT of people to their keyboards, hear is a selection of what people are saying about the decision across social media.

Kelvin Batey – Team Ireland & Current Masters World Champion

Four amazing GB riders deemed not good enough to race at the World Championships where Olympic places are on the line and 4 years worth of work and sacrifice are being totally disregarded for the sake of 1 race.

The money spent over the last 4 years per rider on travel, equipment, testing, various coaching for them, hours of training, time spent away from family, sacrifices etc to then pull their opportunity at the last minute just doesn’t make sense especially when it happened to one of the four riders 2 years ago who then independently went to the Worlds in Rotterdam where he won a bronze medal. Maybe BC just don’t want to be embarrassed again to let anyone make their own way to a World Championships and prove them wrong.

These people making the decisions have no knowledge of BMX or how it works and I’m sure the coaches who work with the riders every day have pushed the case for them to be entered at Colombia. It’s such a shame for the riders and our sport but all we can do is back them and from personal experience this will mean alot to them all.

Longer term, what knock on effect will it have for parents or even riders to want to be involved in the GB BMX pyramid when it can have such a negative effect on them not only professionally but personally too.

Shame on the idiots responsible, I never thought anything like this would ever happen again.

Marco Dellisola – Stay Strong & former Masters World Champion

Same old British Cycling kicking riders in the b*llocks! Tre Whyte and Quillan Isidore should be going to Colombia!

Dale Holmes – DHR Team Owner & Multiple World Champion

This is disturbing.  We must stand up for both our sport and under-served kids just wanting and deserving a chance.  British Cycling continues to dwindle what’s left of their respect in the BMX community.

Dave Godfrey – Euro Dave

Tre whyte is not only an awesome BMX racer he is also a credit to the sport , always got time to chat with the kids and sign autographs , he DESERVES to be riding at the World Champs …why should some two bob wanker at Britisish Cycling with no background in BMX deny him the chance to fulfil his dreams……Hang your heads in shame BC

Mark Thompson

What I find is a joke is they USE Quillan as the face for BC and SKY Academy, he’s on TV yet they don’t want to fund him ??

Then tell him he can’t fund himself?

So if Liam didn’t get selected I’m sure ALDI would fund him, yet he still wouldn’t be allowed to go.

This makes BC and all they stand for a laughing stock, and at the Worlds when everyone asks where’s the team they just show up with THREE..!!!!

No wonder riders left BC and the academy, they’re not worth a toss.

In all fairness they probably don’t want a repeat of 2014 and Tre’s success and more egg on their faces.

Mark Hutt

I have to say and don’t often make post on things like this, but I think it’s an absolute disgrace not sending Tre and Quillan. Just like Beth, they need the exposure as they are the next generation!

Ryan Martin – 3 Time and Current World Champion

Outrageous the opportunities there not giving the riders! can’t even self fund now that’s bad!

Quillan Isidore – Full time BMX athlete for GB

Team British Cycling (Shane & Ian) main agenda is track cycling not BMX. Tre has been treated unfairly on many occasions, but unfortunately behind closed doors senior management make hasty decisions that no matter how much you/we complain or appeal they don’t take anything onboard. Shit, I know!

The facts are both Marcus Bloomfield & Grant White do a lot for us and have our best interest at heart and developed our squad to the position we’re in now. It’s just a shame it gets ruined by unfair decisions within senior management.

Mike Wong – Dialled Bikes / FTB Owner

A really sad situation, that the BMX community is behind the strongest GB BMX squad ever right now, especially after Liam and Kyle just achieved something amazing at the weekend, and they deliver this news.

Don’t really see what there is to gain by not sending Tre.

Stu Dixon – DK UK Team Manager

For the first time in a while we have a good enough ‘squad’ to represent GB at the Worlds, so why the hell the big nobs upstairs at BC aren’t willing to let them race even at their own expense is beyond me, Tre, Quillan & Paddy have earned their stripes… so let them represent their country.

Clive Gosling – GT Bicycles UK Marketing Manager

I don’t know enough about the situation but Tre looked strong in Manchester this weekend, both him and Quillan had some tough luck races. Surely BC would take as many spaces as they can?
