British BMX Series Race Report
Round 3&4 – Cyclopark, Kent – 11-12th April 2015.
So we hit the outdoor part of the race season last weekend at Cyclopark in Kent for rounds 3&4 of the British BMX Series 2015. Yeah it was windy, yeah it rained, yeah there were crashes, but the track was riding great, the venue had started to seem a little less intimidating, I’d only had one crash, made a couple of mains and the team had looked and rode amazing.
The guys were out on track in both blocks of racing so over two days that’s a whole load of laps for the guys. Shane and me (Jools) set about the cruiser classes on both days, just as a casual warm up for the 20”…..Shane smashed the 15-16s, not dropping a lap and extended his overall lead in the class points standings. I got in amongst it in the 40-44s but the A finals eluded me this weekend. A 3rd and 4th in the B finals for me………..and a bit of sulking if I’m honest!
Billy was on fine form in the Elites as he completes his build up to the first World Cup in Manchester this weekend. The first day he breezed into the main and after a so-so gate, forced his way to mid pack and finished just off the podium in 4th. Day two and the wind saw the Pro section closed for the day, making the Elite class even tighter as they fought to funnel through the tight first turn. Billy picked his moment and made it count to take a solid 3rd place finish and a step on the podium
In Championship Women Joey went about business with some of the fastest of the new breed as they come of age. On her way to the finals, she only dropped a couple of laps and looked unphased as she smoothed her way through each lap. In the main on day one there was a bit of bunching in the first turn and Goffy struggled to find space to work leaving her in 4th. On day two she was up the sharp end from the gate and went bar to bar with the Peckham’s Katurah Davidson down the last straight, taking 2nd in a drag race to the line. After racing Joey said “Well, as much as pumping through the entire third straight pains me both physically and mentally… I can’t complain at 2nd today in severe cross winds. Stoked for my teamie Billy Luckhurst on 3rd in Elite men, and gotta thank that little gobshite in the middle (see pic) for being a great TM too. I love these guys!”

The teams tea boy Syd is looking at ticking off as many semi finals in the 13’s this year. Looking smooth out on track he made it on day one after a solid quarter final lap, on the second day he was looking on point again but came unclipped on the first straight and couldn’t make back the distance. Still got a couple of turnbars in though. If you cant win it, you may as well style it. Shane had a bit to do at Cyclopark after a rough start to the season in Manchester. He sneaked into the first days A main with a determined ride in the semis and kept the ball rolling with a 4th in the main. The second days main was a chaotic affair with riders struggling in the windy conditions. Shane didn’t get phased by the weather and capitalised on the misfortune of others to take a solid 2nd and put himself back int eh hunt. I had written down “4 A Mains” on a piece of paper again as my goal for the weekend and after messing up in cruiser I wasn’t going to miss out on 20”. I took a 6th on the Saturday and a 5th on the Sunday sticking me up in 4th overall in the rankings which will do nicely for now.
Thats four races out of ten already completed in the British BMX Series and things are looking rosy for the team. Massive thanks to Ison Distribution, Identiti Bikes, Gusset Bikes, Halo Wheels, ODI Grips, Renthal, TSG, XLR8 Bike School and anybody who helped out or came and said “Hi” over the weekend.
The Series moves onto Cumbernauld, Scotland for rounds 5&6 on 23-24th May. The team will be there in the team area so come by and say hello and we’ll sort you out some stickers.
