We had a little catch up with the UK’s most travelled Bmx racer Marco Dell’Isolla, and asked him a few quickfire questions about his World Bmx champs experiences past and present.
If any racer knows about Bmx World Championships , its Zellwood……take it away Marco.
1-name – Marco Dell’Isola AKA Zellwood
2-age – 34
3- How many world champs competed in?
This will be my 20th Worlds!
4. That’s a big number how come you’ve been to so many?
I was lucky to do all the Euro based Worlds from when I was a kid and my parents took me to Orlando 87.. Once I was old enough to pay for myself and travel alone I really wanted to travel. I went to Brazil 2002 completely on my own as only a couple of people went from England that year..I got the bug for travel and passport stamps and meeting up with friends on different sides of the World. Before social media the World was a bigger place and you weren’t in contact with friends like you are now. The Worlds was always a good party and a fun time.. After Canada 2007 I started to take it a bit more serious and have been in a main every year since then.. I will be at every Worlds from now on until I’m done with BMX, no reason not to go no matter where it is!
4-best result: W1 in Masters 2010 South Africa, W1 Cruiser in 2009 Australia
5-worst result: I got moto’s in Slough 86 at my first Worlds. Actually Canada 97 I was really ill all week in bed and couldn’t leave the hotel room, didn’t do practice but got on the gate on race morning and pulled off at the first turn in moto 1 so I guess that was the worst.. Especially as I’d done well in the World Cup in Calgary the week before and finished 7th overall in Junior Men World Cup rankings.. Disappointing!
6- best organized worlds you’ve been to: Valkenswaard 2004 was a pretty awesome event. Atmosphere, the big screens, the whole set up was good, although the track could have been better…..Paris Atmosphere was good and Brazil 2002 was epic.
7- worst organized worlds you’ve been to: Louisville 2001 USA and Holland 1993
8-best worlds track you’ve raced: Brazil 2002 and maybe Canada 2007
9- worst worlds track you’ve raced: Holland 93 sucked! Too long, too wide all the way round, the surface was shitty the track was too big a scale and then it rained for a week! Terrible.. USA 2001 sucked too! The whole event not just the track very disappointing.
10- what is the best race you have seen at a world champs: Sarah Jane Nichols in 1986, Manuel Lopez vs Bubba Harris in Louisville 2001, incredible race how he passed Bubba down that short last straight I’ll never know. John Purse pulling Romero on the line in Canada 97 was exciting for the fans, but Yvan Lapraz in Canada 07 was insane to come back and win after unclipping on the gate in Junior Men. Also Javier Colombo passing Stumphauser on the line in Brazil after about 500mtrs was nuts, the crowd went mental, first South American Elite Champion winning in South America..
11-what country would your dream worlds be in?
We’ve been to some pretty Rad places over the years, getting to race in China was a cool experience but Colombia was somewhere I always wanted to go so I’m stoked to see Medallin 2016. I’ll 100% be there so that is the next one to look forward to foe me!.. Although anywhere in South America are my ideal spots, Chile Venezuela, Equador would be cool, and I’m sure Aruba would be Rad. It’s a different vibe down there, the latin people are passionate.
12- is there any country you would hesitate to go to for a world champs? If the Worlds was on the moon I’d be there…But actually the one place I definitely wouldn’t go to for a Worlds is Ipswich! I hate the A14 more than anything so I’d probably settle for the Live feed on that one!
13-which worlds have you had the most fun at away from racing…and why?? We always have fun at the Worlds but Brazil 2006 was pretty awesome. Spent 5 days in Rio before the race with Todd Lyons, Jason Carnes, Andy Shaw and Jason “First Straight” Lewis, we had an a blast! Some close calls which all added to the adventure!
14- which world champ country has the best looking women? DEFINITELY Brazil! Although Copenhagen and Birmingham had hot women too as my wife was there.. Better throw that one in
15-will you make the final at the NZ worlds , and are you racing 30+ or masters: Yes I will that’s the plan! I havn’t raced or really rode since Birmingham Worlds and broke my shoulder 7 weeks ago so Masters wasn’t realistic so I opted for 30+ Challenge. We still have 1/8’s so will need to be on it.. I’m running on caffeine, experience and confidence to get me through this year!
16-what is your top 3 prediction for elite men at NZ worlds. Well Sam has been killing it all year so you have to say he’s favourite, you always have to include Maris for any big event, Liam P has every chance, Connor always there or thereabouts. I’d have given Tremanis a good shot at a podium before his crash in Belgium and I fancy Kurt Pickard to make the main for the home fans. Ultimately it will come down to who is in lane 1 as the first straight is too short for anyone to pull from outside lane 4 I’d say.. Just like last year Maris was ahead but Sam was inside..Inside lane will be the deciding factor.
17. Who’s on the trip for NZ and when are you leaving?
I’m heading off in about an hour! Pick Andy Shaw up on the way to Heathrow. We have 1 night in Hollywood tonight, gonna spend the day at Venice Beach tomorrow and fly on from LA Friday night.. We are both doing the GB Team Manager role together as Tony Luckhurst is missing this one out so no chilling when we get there.. Should be good, can’t wait! Make sure you don;t miss the action on the Live feed!
Cheers Marco, good luck to you and all the UK riders heading out to New Zealand.
