Great Britain’s Liam Phillips kept his overall lead in the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup with third place at the second round in Papendal.

The 25-year-old finished on the podium behind Australian Sam Willoughby and Dutch rider Twan Van Gendt at the Olympic Training Centre in Arhem.

Phillips, who won at the opening round in Manchester, now sits on 390 points, 40 ahead of Australia’s Anthony Dean.

Phillips started the final strongly and was level with Van Gendt at the first corner. The Dutch rider then pulled away before Willoughby passed Phillips on the third straight.

Despite strong pressure in the final corner, Phillips battled to defend his position and take third spot.

“Super tough day at the track in some horrendous weather. Happy to finish on the podium in 3rd!” Phillips tweeted.

Kyle Evans exited in the 1/8 finals, narrowly missing the cut after three motos.

In the elite women’s racing, 19-year-old Charlotte Green reached the semi-finals.

After torrential rain had caused delays to Saturday’s action, Sunday’s conditions were marginally better and racing started on schedule despite strong winds.

World champion Phillips was second in Saturday’s time-trial and continued his fine form.

He made comfortable progress through the 1/8 finals with a third and two first-place finishes in the three motos, putting him top of his heat.

Twenty-year-old Kyle Evans was unable to join Phillips. Sixth, fourth and fifth left Evans fifth overall from eight in his heat with only the top four qualifying.

“It’s been a long old weekend with some crazy conditions. Overall not a good day at the office today! Not the result I was looking for, learnt something new and looking to just move forward,” Evans tweeted.

A typically strong start from the gate saw Phillips win his quarter-final and then narrowly finish second to Van Gendt in the semi-final to make the last eight, where he secured a second successive podium in the series.

Charlotte Green, fourth in Manchester, was fifth and second in the opening heats of the women’s quarter-finals.

Despite a crash in the final heat Green went through to the semi-finals but seventh was not enough to make the final eight.

The next round of the series takes place in Berlin on 13-14 June
