Derby Ssquared team is in its 5th year as the team lined up for Round 1 and 2 at Manchester Indoor. For those that don’t know the team is the brain child of the coaches at Derby BMX club providing its riders with a national identity when competing at the British BMX Series. And this has proved to work with 99% of Derby’s national riders having been part of the team at some point. The team is open to any Derby rider with the only conditions of the team is 1, you ride for Derby BMX club and 2, you ride the 3x USA BMX Frame of the year – an SSquared, can’t go wrong with the best voted frame on the market! It’s a formula the coaching team firmly believe in and excited to see how our riders do for 2016. Our youngest member Max Clare in the 8’s hoping to improve in his second season. Having broken the A final duct in his first year of racing he’s hoping for more this. Round 1 didn’t see it going to plan not making it past the quarters but Round 2 saw better making it to the semis but settle for 6th place in the B final. Watch out for Max at the rest of the Nationals, we are especially looking forward to his home BRITS, he’s got some speed down Derby’s first straight! “Veteran” of the team Zak Greene in the 9’s, the only member for the opening weekend who’s been to every race in SSquared colours since the start in 2012, looked to be on form again for the start of the season. Looking convincing in motos he secured his way to his first A final of the year at the first time of asking. In the final it didn’t quite happen, battling to the end throwing some berm moves in, still had to settle for 8th. Day 2 was no different making 2/2 A finals, unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be as he crashed out in the turn, only to get back up to ride off but with a snapped chain his day was done! The 11’s saw both Jack Boocock and Charlie Clare in action. Best mates off the track these two mean business on! Saturday saw both boys making the semis battle settling for B finals, however Sunday saw them both make the A final after finishing 3/4 in the same semi! Charlie’s first ever A final.

Making the most of it Charlie went for it in the final and looked to repeat Jacks podium from last year. Holding 3rd place for most the way round after an electric start, however he was under threat down the final straight. A battle to the line meant it was a pump race, for Charlie only to miss out on his first podium by a “gnats gnacker” jack was one place behind in 5th. Great results for the boys! Alex Reade made it a consistent weekend making semi finals both days. Unfortunately having to settle for B finals, but there is definitely more to come from Alex this year. Owen Poulter returned to the national series for 2016, after spending some time racing his MX bike. His first big race for nearly a year didn’t show and he looked good in the motos. He made it through to the semis both days but couldn’t make the main battle settled for B finals. Not bad for a stacked 16’s class. Daniel Walker had it tough also in the 16’s not making it past the motos on either day, but had better success on his first outing racing cruiser class. Having been crowned Midlands Cruiser 15-16 champion for 2015, he’s elected to race national cruiser for 2016. He took his opening moto win and made his first A final at the first time of asking, following it up with another at Round 2 taking 5th place both days. Katy Davis racing in the very tough championship female class is only in her second year of competing. Having a mixture of elite and academy riders it was always going to be tough. Setting out making her intentions known she had a great start in her first moto. Slotting into second place round the turn she then got cut up resulting in her coming off the bike. With deep bruising to her leg she was unable to continue and would put her out of action for day 2 as well. She’s back up and riding now so watch out for her at the next round in Birmingham!
