RACE REPORT – Derby Ssquared

Season Roundup

2016 season saw Derby Ssquared’s 5th consecutive series on the National circuit.  With the team slightly smaller this year than previous the amount of results seriously made up for it.

The team saw 3 of its original riders in the line-up with now 9’s rider Zak Greene and 16’s Owen and Cameron Poulter.  Greene went about the year trying to get back into the national Top 8 which he narrowly missed out on last year in 9th, but this year a lot of determination and fight saw him reach his goal and take the National #8 plate.  Jack Boocock in the 11’s looked to go better than his 12th plate last year making a number of A finals all year with club mate Charlie Clare, but consistency paid off as Boocock made national #7.  Daniel Walker also had a top 8 finish taking 6th in 15-16 cruiser which was his first year of racing national level cruiser.
Blackpool proved to be one of DESQ’s best weekends of the national series with a number of firsts.  Charlie Clare took his first podium with an impressive string of results capped off by a 2ndplace finish, to be Derby’s only podium finish of the year.  Alex Reade made his first A final after several years of trying and Josh Merchant after constantly making B finals and a number of 2nd places took the B final win!  Alex Reade was also DESQ’s only member of the team to be selected for the Midlands RSR however, unfortunately on the RSR he broke his collar bone which put him out for the Brits and Midland Champs.

With the Brits being at our home track we also went in with high hopes, we didn’t get any 01 plates, but had 4 riders making the finals and in the mix.  The Clare brothers are certainly asserting themselves as Derby’s brothers to watch both making finals at the Brits. 8’s Max saw he was in the mix picking up a deserved 5th place, brother Charlie is certainly one to watch for 2017 and improves every race, unfortunately crashing out in the final to take 8th but was right in there. Daniel Walker in the 15-16 cruiser continued his clean sweep of A finals making his first ever Brits final and taking 6th.  And 13’s Josh Merchant showed hard work and persistence pays off.  Having making his breakthrough from quarters to B finals this year in the national series the A final had eluded him until now, and what a time to make your first national final!  In a tough 13’s class Josh looked strong all day and make it count in through the motos and knockout round, and then the semi’s putting himself in the mix.  In the final he cleverly avoided a first corner crash to take home a well-earned 5th place, and even broke a smile!
We are also pleased to say we had some great regional success with Midland Series Champions going to Max Clare in the 8’s, Zak Greene in the 9’s, Charlie Clare in the 11’s, Alex Reade in the 14’s. Owen Poulter took an impressive 3rd in 17-24 class with brother Cameron 6th.  Katy Davis took 3rd for Championship women and Daniel Walker took 2nd in both 15-15 cruiser and 16’s. Zach Reeves took 3rd also in the 8’s. Jack Boocock and Josh Merchant took 4th in the 11’s and 13’s respectively. Arthur Ellis took 6th in the Derby stacked 11’s.

We would like to say a massive thank you to John Sawyer for all the help he provides with getting us the best frames and parts to race with. We’re proud to say we run the 3 times award winning USA BMX Frame of the Year and it certainly helps us be at our best!  We would also like to thank Lauren Smith, Simon Greene, Will Hart and Chris Palmer the coaches at Derby BMX Club to make sure we are race ready.  Also thanks to Loic at Custom Jersey, Sorted and Maxtrax making sure once again our race gear is on point!
We’re proud to say the team will be running again for 2017 and we already have Derby club regional riders chomping at the bit to make the national Derby team next year, we can’t wait!
